I’m Graduating…Now What?

Today is my final critique of my final semester of my final year of my BFA program. It’s the day my professors will gather together to go through my paintings (10 in all) and make some final suggestions for last minute changes before it goes up in the gallery. I’ve found that when your art improves, the criticism gets much harsher. What was once a fluffy verbal head pat in my beginning drawing course has evolved into being regularly accused that I have forgotten how to paint. It’s brutal, and it’s why most people quit. In just two years, my cohort of 38 turned into a cohort of 24, then 20, then 12, then 6. There are 9 of us in my senior seminar (intended to be the final class of the degree program) but the remaining three have a few credits to make up in the spring.

I made it! After this week I will have about three weeks remaining to halfheartedly show up to my required studio hours to work on some projects for an elective course and maybe even paint my graduation cap. My graduation paperwork has been accepted and is just awaiting the input of my final grades. Lazy days are ahead. Kind of.

In 28 days I will be spending the day uninstalling , then my graduating cohort’s show and transporting my art to its final destination — some is destined for the walls of my home and some will be headed for the homes of my collectors. My last 5 months of late nights will just be loaded…

After walking away from my job, I decided to take the plunge into art school and make my way through the world as an artist. New stories posted every Wednesday!
